VMAN ESXi Hosts and VMs

When adding a node, how would I know that the VMAN Orion poller is being used?

What I see when adding a node under the define node section: polling hostname or IP address, polling method (external node, status only, most devices, windows and hyper-v servers, windows and linux servers) and under additional monitoring options i see (check boxes for UCS manager credentials, poll for vmware and poll for F5.  I don't see an option to select the polling method (i.e. VMan).

Several of our ESXi hosts have been added but they show up as unmanaged, since they are added why would they be unmanaged since Orion should start polling as soon as they are added?

Please find the query to pull report from VMAN for datastore space usage with LUN details.

Generally I did not find the parameter LUN name while creating the web-based report. So i pulled it using SQL query.

SELECT [dbo].[VIM_DataStores].Name AS DataStore, [dbo].[VIM_Luns].Name AS LUN, [dbo].[VIM_DataStores].Capacity, [dbo].[VIM_DataStores].FreeSpace, [dbo].[VIM_DataStores].ProvisionedSpace, [dbo].[VIM_DataStores].SpaceUsage

FROM [dbo].[VIM_DataStores]

INNER JOIN [dbo].[VIM_Luns] ON [dbo].[VIM_DataStores].DataStoreID=[dbo].[VIM_Luns].DataStoreID;

Hope i have helped a bit

Hello,

Just trying my luck if someone could also experienced my issue in VMAN console. I upgraded my VMAN to the latest version but unfortunately, when I was trying to access the VMAN console in order to configure the license, I've noticed that my VMAN console is only loading and I received an error "Invalid Server response" when I tried to use the network setting? (https://ipaddress:5480).

"vmStatsProvider" causing Solarwinds to give false "down" alerts?

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have experience Solarwinds giving false "down" alerts on with virtual servers?

It happened on a server yesterday morning, twice. We received alerts from Solarwinds that a particular server was down around 7:00 and 8:00 AM.

In looking at the application logs for that time on the server I spied numerous line items:

Information10/9/2014 7:08vmStatsProvider256GeneralThe "vmStatsProvider" is successfully initialized for this Virtual Machine. WMI namespace: "root\cimv2".

If I understand this correctly these are coming from the VMWare tools that is installed on the virtual instance?

Can this be causing Solarwinds to see the server being down?

Thanks everyone,

Cheryl

Noob Question - Removing an host from VMAN

Hi guys and girls,

Sorry if this is a silly question but I'm new to VMAN and I'm struggling to find out how you remove a host?!

Under virtualisation assets I've clicked on Virtualisation settings but I can only see the option to Enable or Disable Hyper-V polling.

Am I missing something really obvious?

Many thanks in advance.

How to alert on vMan Component Volumes?

Environment: vMan Orion 8.1 (no appliance) and Orion 2017.3 with SAM 6.5

Objective: Alert on disk utilization from any VMs managed by vMan.  These VMs are only managed by vMan and not managed by SAM thus the VMs are not managed nodes from Orion perspective. In other words, I like to alert when vMan VM Component Volumes object shows in Red:

I don't see any option to specify these objects and triggers when building alerts.

Thanks

Vcenter Status Unknown after vcenter update

I have looked over similar threads but could not find an answer in any of them for my issue. We currently have VMAN v8.2 monitoring two vcenter nodes. We updated one of the vcenter nodes to Vcenter 6.5.0.22000 Build 9451637 and now solar winds is reporting the operational state as "unknown". If I check the node itself, it is reporting correctly. The individual esxi hosts are also still reporting in correctly. The vcenter box that we did not update is still reporting in correctly and is showing Vcenter status as "Up". Polling method is vman orion. Does anyone have any insight into this?

Missing Orion VMAN features (which were in the VMAN Appliance)

$

I'd like to start gather together a list of features which are missing from the Orion VMAN replacement for the VMAN Appliance.

1.  Inability to search for datastores

There are really basic features which are missing.   I cannot figure out how to search for a datastore and displays its metrics, where you could just type the datastore name, or a partial name plus wildcard, and get a list of datastores, then drill down in to the metrics of the one you want.

2. Inability to display progress of scans.

In the VMAN appliance you could see when scans were being run against ESX hosts / vCenters and it would show up ones with problems.   We can't see this information, it seems to be buried in text-based log files.  This isn't helpful when trying to diagnose whether scans are working correctly.

3. Alerting is slower

Notifications about events seems to coincide with some of the infrequent scans, the ones which occur every 8-12 hours, and thus notifications of events such as snapshots being taken, etc.,  are delayed to such extend that they cannot be called monitoring, which historical reference.  Unless they arrive quickly they become meaningless.   If the system tells me a snapshot was taken 12 hours ago it has no real use.  How can alerting be speeded up to match what Solarwinds offers elsewhere.

I'd like to hear what features other people feel are missing from Orion VMAN.   I welcome the integration verses having to update appliances and collectors.   The new update process is much better, but there are serious missing, very basic, features in the Orion VMAN module which were features we paid substantial sums for in the appliance, but which have not been brought in to VMAN Orion.   Given these are absolutely fundamental features, such as search for a datastore, and I can't figure out how to do this most simplist of things in Orion VMAN, I would go back to the appliance if I could.  But given new features are only now appearing in Orion VMAN we seem to have little choice.

And please, before anybody says, I can't run the appliance as well as the Orion VMAN as it just would not work and I couldn't get Solarwinds support to fix it, so I just gave up trying.

Clarification of VMAN Free Additional Polling Engine (APE)

Is there documentation that more completely details the role, function, and implementation of the VMAN Free Additional Polling Engine (APE)?

(....what aspect of VMAN are they intended to be used for? ,   which installer would be used to install one?... )

VMan / Orion report for CPU Ready [%]

$

Hi all,

Trying to get a report via the Orion portal for CPU ready.

I know it's avail in VMan, but in Orion the value comes up with {0:0.00} ms.

Anyone familiar with this and can confirm it's actually displaying CPU Ready % and just needs the Custom Format changed?

I'd prefer it in Orion obviously, but if VMan Reporting is the only solution, then I need to narrow the calculations down to business hours M-F, 6am - 9pm.

In my below examples, I attempted to set the clustername seperated by OR statements before the AND, however it did not appear to work.
Is it possible to optimise the queries for the the VMs in the various clusters, or is it correct how I have done it.

VM - CPU Utilisation
vm.powerstate:poweredOn AND cluster.name:"METRO-PROD" OR
vm.powerstate:poweredOn AND cluster.name:"DC-PROD" OR
vm.powerstate:poweredOn AND cluster.name:"OL-PROD" OR
vm.powerstate:poweredOn AND cluster.name:"DC-DEV" OR
vm.powerstate:poweredOn AND cluster.name:"OL-DEV" OR
vm.powerstate:poweredOn AND cluster.name:"DC-OPS"

Thanks

Performance Metric Definitions

$

I'm working on definitions for the metrics being monitored with VMAN. I have a few questions about them too. This is the list I have so far:

CPU Used: Percentage utilization of CPU resources.

source:

CPU Usage: Measured in MHz for the amount of CPU Usage.

source:

CPU Swap Wait: Swap wait time is time spent waiting for memory to be swapped in. When the VM is waiting for memory, it is not doing work.

source: https://www.dynatrace.com/support/doc/appmon/installation/deployment-guide/additional-deployment-best-practices/virtualization-best-practices/

CPU Ready: CPU Ready Time is a vSphere metric that records the amount of time a virtual machine is ready to use CPU but was unable to schedule time because all CPU resources (on a ESX host) are busy.

source: http://houseofbrick.com/cpu-ready-time-blog-part-i/

CPU Max Limited: Sys|Resource CPU Max Limited (%) (1 min. average) Percent of resource CPU that is limited to the maximum

amount. Average value during a one-minute period.

source: https://docs.vmware.com/en/vRealize-Operations-Manager/6.7/vrealize-operations-manager-67-reference-guide.pdf

CPU Load (On Host): Percentage of CPU utilization on the host.

source:

CPU Load: Percentage of CPU utilization by the guest os.

source:

CPU Latency: Percentage of time the VM is unable to run because it is contending for access to the physical CPUs.

source: https://docs.vmware.com/en/vRealize-Operations-Manager/7.0/com.vmware.vcom.metrics.doc/GUID-1322F5A4-DA1D-481F-BBEA-99B228E96AF2.html

CPU Demand: This metric is an indicator of the overall demand for CPU resources by the workloads in the cluster. It shows the percentage of CPU resources that all the virtual machines might use if there were no CPU contention or CPU limits set. It represents the average active CPU load in the past five minutes.

source: https://docs.vmware.com/en/vRealize-Operations-Manager/6.7/vrealize-operations-manager-67-reference-guide.pdf

Memory Usage (On Host): Percentage utilization of Memory resources on the host.

source:

Memory Usage: Percentage utilization of Memory resources on the guest os.

source:

Memory Granted: Amount of memory available for use.

source: https://docs.vmware.com/en/vRealize-Operations-Manager/6.7/vrealize-operations-manager-67-reference-guide.pdf

Memory Demand: Guest operating system demand in kilobytes

source:

Consumed Percent Memory Load:

source:

Consumed Memory Load:

Balloon Memory Load: This metric shows the amount of memory currently used by the

virtual machine memory control. It is only defined at the VM level

source: https://docs.vmware.com/en/vRealize-Operations-Manager/6.7/vrealize-operations-manager-67-reference-guide.pdf

Do these definitions make sense to anyone and are there any that should be updated for what VMAN is actually reporting?  I am also seeing a weird thing. My  Memory Usage, Memory Granted, Memory Demand, Consumed Percent Memory Load, and Consumed Memory Load are all reporting 0 or --. Which doesn't make sense because I know the VM is using memory. Anyone have ideas as to why that may be? Thanks for your time and hope someone gets a little use out of having these definitions.

Setting up ClearVM

I was looking for free cloud storage/hosting and just landed on clearvm yesterday. On setup page I saw that it requires atleast 2 computers. One that is I am using and other as a host server. What if for now, I want to use my laptop as my host server? I mean only 1 computer.

Need to report on configured storage per guest VM for newly created Guest VMs

$

I was asked to set up a report on newly created Guest VMs and show the configured resources for the guest VM. I found the canned report for this, but I am not able to report the amount of configured storage for the Guest VM. I found the column heading "Total Storage Size" under the Virtual Machine object. When I add this to the report, the field is empty for all of the Guest VMs listed in the report. Is this the correct column to be reporting on or is there a better one to use?

Vcenter status unknown in VMan

Hi,

In our VMan vcenters are showing as grayed out with description Node status unknown. While checking the Virtualization settings Polling status is shown as Polling with Polling method VMAN Orion enabled. Also the credentials used for VMware polling is working and testing is successful.

Can some one help me to know what can be the reason for this.  We are using VMan 8.4

VMAN - Additional VM settings reporting

$

Hello Thwack,

I am looking to see if there is a specific way to report off the VMWare virtual machine settings, specifically, if a NIC is connected and/or if the checkbox for 'Connect at power on' is checked. I am not sure where in the DB this information would live or if Solarwinds is even polling on these VM settings. I wan unsuccessful in finding an answer thus far. I have attached a screenshot from VMWare.

The report I am looking to build would report on virtual machines that have connect at power on unchecked for when the machine reboots, the NIC will disconnect and sometimes goes unnoticed while people are troubleshooting the downtime. This is a preventative measure to assist when it goes unchecked.

Thank you!
