Excluding ESXi hosts from monitoring

We want to exclude some hosts from monitoring in the vCenter. How can we exclude the hosts in vMan ?

We found in SolarWinds Virtualization Manager Administration guide - We can change the access permissions of the vCenter user account to limit what it can access.

Access permissions are typically controlled in the VMware client by assigning the "No Access" role to the vCenter account for the hosts and VMs you want to restrict.

But we are following a standard hierarchy to provide access to the folders in vCenter. Is any other way to exclude the hosts, without creating a user with No Access” role in vCenter ?

Hardware Monitoring using SAM

Hi All,

In our environment we had been polling hardware data from Vcenter into SAM(6.4) using CIM protocol. But as we've upgraded SAM to 6.6, we couldn't find the option in the Virtualization setting to poll via vcenter or via ESX Directly. Instead now we are getting poling method options as VMAN Orion and VMAN Appliance. Why is that so?

These changes have effected the monitoring of ESXis.

What's the solution for this?

Many Thanks!

VMAN with vCenter 6.5u2

Hello, I have been searching for a while trying to find a complete support matrix for VMAN and some of the Solar Winds products.

However, I haven't had much luck.  My end goal is to upgrade vCenter to 6.5u2,  and I just wanted to do some compatibility checks to make sure any upgrades to VMAN / other Solar Wind products take place before I do the vCenter upgrade, not after.   The other products I have (vROps, Avamar, Zerto)  all have very concise compatibility matrices that have helped with this project, however I can't really find anything for VMAN.  I don't even know if VMAN is the only Solar Wind product I need to worry about when doing the vCenter upgrade (we use Solar Winds Orion)

Does anybody know if there is a compatibility document for VMAN, or better yet for all the other Solar Winds products in the Orion suite that may be effected when doing a vCenter upgrades?  Will I also need to upgrade VIM?

Thanks,

Shows disable on additional web servers but enabled on main poller.

If you try to enable it on additional web servers, you get an error that it cannot communicate with the main poller.

If you point your browser to the main poller, it shows enabled.

Hi,

What is the root password for the appliance? I have had a power failure on the machine running the virtual instance of Solarwinds Virtualization Manager, which means i need to run fsck before it can restart.

However, i can't run fsck without the root password.

Thanks in advance!

Virtualization Manager Versus IVIM

Can someone explain the difference between Virtualization Manager and IVIM?  What do I get from Virtualization Manager that I don't get from IVIM?  Does it require a separate machine and cannot be installed on the same machine as NPM and all the other modules?

Uninstalling Virtualization Manager

My company has decided on not renewing the Virtualization Manager due to the new VMWare monitoring capabilities.

We are wanting to know if anyone knows if it is OK to just delete the .ovf form VMWare, or is there a special procedure?

VMs with Old Snapshots - How do I filter results.

How to I filter the results to either exclude specific server names or server names beginning with a certain string ? It appears the alert has to be configured and the scope search query amended. Currently it's as below.

vm.snap.dateCreated:[* TO now-30days]

I've tried all sorted of syntax without success

i.e  “vm.name:Servername*” AND vm.snap.dateCreated:[* TO now-30days]

If I save the amendment and run Evaluate now I get the same or no results at all.

Is a better Search query reference available than the one linked from Help ?

"vmStatsProvider" causing Solarwinds to give false "down" alerts?

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone have experience Solarwinds giving false "down" alerts on with virtual servers?

It happened on a server yesterday morning, twice. We received alerts from Solarwinds that a particular server was down around 7:00 and 8:00 AM.

In looking at the application logs for that time on the server I spied numerous line items:

Information10/9/2014 7:08vmStatsProvider256GeneralThe "vmStatsProvider" is successfully initialized for this Virtual Machine. WMI namespace: "root\cimv2".

If I understand this correctly these are coming from the VMWare tools that is installed on the virtual instance?

Can this be causing Solarwinds to see the server being down?

Thanks everyone,

Cheryl

Possible to have a VMAN alert delete the 'oldest' snapshot, not the 'last' snapshot.

We're running vRealize Automation here and my 400+ users don't understand the purpose and dangers of snapshots.  We've tried to get them to follow VMware's best practices, but they want infinite snapshots and to store them forever.  As a compromise we allow the users to create up to 5 snapshots of their VM's, and they can revert to them for up to 30 days.  Unfortunately while vRealize Automation will stop the users from creating additional snapshots, or reverting to old ones, it does not automatically delete old snapshots.  I was looking at if I could automate cleaning them up via VMAN, but when I set the alert the only action I see is to delete the last snapshot, which would be the most recent, not the oldest snapshot.  Manually using the delete snapshot functionality in VMAN allows me to select the oldest snapshot (and fortunately not include the child snapshots).  Has anyone every tried anything like this or have any suggestions on how to set VMAN to do it tied to the alert?

Create Report for Virtual Machines Including its Host Server Name

Hi Team,

I'm currently creating a custom report of all my virtual machines in hyper-v, however I can't find a way to add its host server name to the report for example:

SERVER1 192.168.0.1  Windows Server 2012  Hosted By: HyperV-Server1

As for now I was able to retrieve all my virtual machines in one report but I'm unable to get its host server name

Your suggestions will be highly appreciated,

Best regards,

Is there a report that shows iops for each VM over seven days?

Haprdware details not polling in ESX host

Hi, We have a ESX server in Vmware5.5 version. We are able to poll all the data including host servers except hardware details. In the hardware details we are getting the error as Hardware polling failed: Polling of chassis (CIM_Chassis class) failed. The operation has timed out. Can some one please help me why this is happening.

VIM Max Iops vs VMAN Peak Iops

I'm trying to run some reports to see what datastores have been exceeding a few different thresholds.   When I pull datastore statistics in orion, maxiops never seems to get too high.   However charting a few datastores in VMAN that i know are heavy hitters i see some pretty substantial peaks.

How are these calculated differently?   Also, in vman is it possible to run reports against the historical data?  I know that data points are there, just not sure how to run reports against it and export.

Thanks.

Still hunting phantom snapshots

I have a feeling that I have significant opportunity to hunt down and eliminate many phantom snapshots. Unfortunately, the Orphaned VMs report is broken in version 6.1 and later, but the Alert for VM Phantom Snapshot Files appears to have the information I need. Also unfortunately, the only way to view the phantom snapshot files is by mousing over the alert. Does anyone know of a way to extract the Phantom Files column, either via a query or report?

Hosts with Problems: 503 Error

Hello,

When using the Virtualization tab, i get the following error message on most of my hosts and a bunch of VMs:

Error while connecting to VMware device - The request failed with HTTP status 503: Service Unavailable (Failed to connect to endpoint: [class Vmacore::Http::LocalServiceSpec:0000000001C5F7A0] _serverNamespace = /sdk _isRedirect = false _port = 8085).

We checked the "VMware vSphere web client" service and it was running and set to automatic. Restarted the service. No effect.

Thoughts?

How is hardware status data propagated from VMAN to Orion via Integration?

$

With Virtualization Manager enabled, we are sending data from our VMAN environment into our Orion instance.  The datacenter engineers reached out because they had replaced some failed hardware in a host in our cluster and asked how long it took for that data to update.

When I checked the status, I saw that the last polled time was 4:26AM.  That's an odd time since I know that the Hardware Details statuses come from the VMware API when VMAN and Orion are integrated.  We are using the default 12 hour interval for configuration polling and, when I checked, the configuration for the vCenter that manages this host was being polled at 10:30ish.  I kicked off a configuration poll anyway.  I jumped into the VIM_Hosts table and searched for my host to get the VIM_Hosts.ManagedObjectID (host-178515 in my case).  Then I jumped out to my VMAN appliance and did a 'cat /var/hyper9/logs/master.log | grep -i host-178515'

2017-01-13 10:24:52,680 [ConfigData-8] DEBUG com.hyper9.service.configitem.storage.DataStorageProcessor$ConfigDataTask:517 - Processed config data for HostServer host-178515 for job aedecbb8-22dc-4df6-aa76-471aec556580 in 1058.771 ms

I found this entry which indicated that the config data (vs the dozens of other log entries that said 'Processed 5120 samples' -- that is the performance data) but still no change in the hardware status on that node.

I dug a little deeper and looked up the node in APM_HardwareInfo by the nodeID (also found in the VIM_Hosts table) and found that the LastPollTime was 2016-11-13 09:26:43.330 (NOTE:  This is obviously UTC time even though the field name doesn't say so!) and that the categories with problems shows the piece of hardware that has an issue.

Now I am *really* confused because I thought that I should have been able to force an update to this node from VMAN by pulling the configuration data.

After all that my question is -- How is the hardware status data updated in Orion if you have a VMAN instance integrated?  How long should it take to refresh that status data after a change is made?

Vcenter Status Unknown after vcenter update

$

I have looked over similar threads but could not find an answer in any of them for my issue. We currently have VMAN v8.2 monitoring two vcenter nodes. We updated one of the vcenter nodes to Vcenter 6.5.0.22000 Build 9451637 and now solar winds is reporting the operational state as "unknown". If I check the node itself, it is reporting correctly. The individual esxi hosts are also still reporting in correctly. The vcenter box that we did not update is still reporting in correctly and is showing Vcenter status as "Up". Polling method is vman orion. Does anyone have any insight into this?
