We don't see anywhere the old Collection jobs that we used to have in VMAN Appliance (Configuration data every 12 hrs and Performance data every 10 mints), do we have something similar in VMAN Orion?

No VM search in Virtualization Summary page
We have Virtualization Manager 8.1 in Orion. No separate appliance. There doesn't appear to be a way to search for a VM on the Summary page. If I don't know what host a VM is on it can be a long process to find. Is there someway to do this?
VMAN Snapshot Polling
Our backup solutions uses snapshots in it's backup process, with this happening nightly we have a desire to send out a daily report to see if there are any snapshots that may have been left behind.
The issue has been that the report isn't accurate all the time.
Additionally, i've deleted Snapshots and after hours SolarWinds is still showing them.
I've been trying to research the polling interval for this data but can't seem to find any information that talks about it.
All of our polling seems to be working in VMAN and eventually the Snapshot data catches up (I'm not sure if it's X time later or if it's after the nightly database maintenance)
HIGH CPU PEAKS
To monitor virtual machines I want to see the CPU average and peaks value of a virtual machine.
For the peak CPU value I am using the query: vm.cpuloadSumpeak.month (%).
However, many virutal machines have a peak above 100% - some are even 600%.
Can somebody explain to me how the peaks are being calculated and/or how I should interpret the peaks?
Thanks!
Old Snapshots Alerting
Hello,
I'm currently building an alert that would inform us about old snapshots on our virtual machines. The alert itself works fine but I would like to put as much information about the snapshot as possible.
So far I have managed to set up an alert notification in the following way (I have cut out non relevant text):
"There is a snapshot older than X days on ${N=SwisEntity;M=Name}.
Oldest snapshot creation date: ${N=SwisEntity;M=OldestSnapshotDate}
Snapshot storage size: ${N=SwisEntity;M=SnapshotStorageSize}
Snapshot summary count: ${N=SwisEntity;M=SnapshotSummaryCount}"
This is nothing special as it only includes variables available from "creator".
What I would like to add is information about snapshot creator and snapshot description.
As far as I know SolarWinds does not pull information from "Monitor" tab in VCenter so it may not be possible to do this currently (please correct me if I'm wrong).
However I found in database that there is table named "[dbo].[VIM_Snapshots]" and column "Name" is basically snapshot description, so I'm looking for help how could I add this information into above alert.
Exporting custom views and reports
Looking to rebuild our VM and STM instances soon (bigger better) and don't want to have to go through the pain again of setting up our custom views and reports created.
Not to be confused with having a report publishing repository.
May have skipped over the admin guide too quickly or missed it in Thwack, however anyone know if this is possible to do for both applications?
Thanks in advance.
Still hunting phantom snapshots
I have a feeling that I have significant opportunity to hunt down and eliminate many phantom snapshots. Unfortunately, the Orphaned VMs report is broken in version 6.1 and later, but the Alert for VM Phantom Snapshot Files appears to have the information I need. Also unfortunately, the only way to view the phantom snapshot files is by mousing over the alert. Does anyone know of a way to extract the Phantom Files column, either via a query or report?
Hosts with Problems: 503 Error
Hello,
When using the Virtualization tab, i get the following error message on most of my hosts and a bunch of VMs:
Error while connecting to VMware device - The request failed with HTTP status 503: Service Unavailable (Failed to connect to endpoint: [class Vmacore::Http::LocalServiceSpec:0000000001C5F7A0] _serverNamespace = /sdk _isRedirect = false _port = 8085).
We checked the "VMware vSphere web client" service and it was running and set to automatic. Restarted the service. No effect.
Thoughts?
You have reached your license limit for monitoring items using the VMAN Orion or Appliance poller.
- I have a new install without a pre-existing VMAN Appliance to integrate or migrate
- "Virtualization Manager Primary v6 - Up to 112 Sockets" License is assigned to the Primary Orion Server
- I do NOT get the error "Error: The virtualization manager primary license could not be validated."
- Updating to VMAN 8.2 did not resolve the error
- Only 80 out of 112 potential sockets used
- 1 vCenter 6.0.0 server and 8 ESXi blades
- Moving monitoring from APE to Primary made no differerence
This article does not seem to apply Error: The virtualization manager primary license could not be validated - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support I recently updated the Primary and all of the APEs to the latest versions to verify this could not be the issue.
When I try to switch vCenter server from Basic to VMAN Orion monitoring, I get the error "You have reached your license limit for monitoring items using the VMAN Orion or Appliance poller."
One would think that the license "Virtualization Manager Primary" would be the necessary license from the description, but I imagine as confusing as all of the docs are surrounding the transition from VMAN Appliance to VMAN Orion that some additional mysterious license is required.
If some additional license is required, I would appreciate it if someone could point me to how to get a Trial for this license to see if that solves the problem.
Thanks.
Noob Question - Removing an host from VMAN
Hi guys and girls,
Sorry if this is a silly question but I'm new to VMAN and I'm struggling to find out how you remove a host?!
Under virtualisation assets I've clicked on Virtualisation settings but I can only see the option to Enable or Disable Hyper-V polling.
Am I missing something really obvious?
Many thanks in advance.
VM Monitor tool and VMWare 6.7?
We have been using the free VM Monitor tool to do quick look at specific ESX servers. However, when we upgraded to VMware 6.7 the toll no longer connects?
Is there a setting we missed or does it not work with this newer version on VMWare?
Any info or suggestions?
"vmStatsProvider" causing Solarwinds to give false "down" alerts?
Hi Everyone,
Does anyone have experience Solarwinds giving false "down" alerts on with virtual servers?
It happened on a server yesterday morning, twice. We received alerts from Solarwinds that a particular server was down around 7:00 and 8:00 AM.
In looking at the application logs for that time on the server I spied numerous line items:

If I understand this correctly these are coming from the VMWare tools that is installed on the virtual instance?
Can this be causing Solarwinds to see the server being down?
Thanks everyone,
Cheryl
Deleted VMs in Virtual Manager Integration
I understand the data retention settings inside of VMAN, where the data will go stale before it gets removed. How is this reflected inside of the Orion Integration? Is there a deleted or to-be-deleted table inside of Orion? Or does it just get removed once it gets fully deleted from VMAN?

How To Add Hyper-V Host and VM's
Hello,
I am not the Hyper-V guy in our office. I am a network guy trying to add a Hyper-V host into Orion so we can see all the hosted VM's.
The Hyper-V guy turned on SNMP and I was able to add the host machine as a node in Orion. But Virtualization Manager doesn't see that node as a Hyper-V host.
How do I tell Orion that this is Hyper-V?
New to VMAN, host monitoring question?
I have installed VMAN 8.2 and connected my vCenter. I can now see all my hosts/VM's. Most of my VM's are already being polled by Agent/SNMP. My question is my hosts. When I click one that says it has an issue it tells me it is not monitored by Orion. I thought that was VMAN's job? So should all my hosts be setup SNMP in NPM also?
High Percent Co-Stop (%CSTP)
Co-Stop (%CSTP) is the percentage of time that a SMP virtual machine was ready to run, but incurred delay due to co-vCPU scheduling contention. To remedy Co-Stop on a VM, decrease the number of vCPUs on that VM. If there are multiple VMs with high %CSTP on a host, it is likely a sign of CPU contention and resource starvation due too many vSMP VMs on that host. Migrate some of those VMs off to other hosts to re-balance the load in the cluster and also, decrease the number of vCPUs allocated to those VMs to see if the %CSTP goes to zero.

Schedule a report using cron
Hi all,
I am trying to schedule a report to run every 4 hours (every day) and spit out VMs with active snapshots. I have got the this same report using powershell, but as we have VMAN, I want to make the most of it.
To achieve this I am using the out of box report: VMs With Snapshots, then schedule a cron as follows:
I have tried to use the conventional cron syntax: 01 */4 * * *
but might need to add Seconds http://knowledgebase.solarwinds.com/kb/questions/4058/Cannot+create+a+new+scheduled+report+with+the+Cron+option
therefore my final syntax reads as follows:
seconds minutes hours dayofmonth month dayofweek
however I get the following error:I have checked time, etc and it is all okay
Could someone assist me please??
thanks in advance, rb51
