VMware 6.5 and high VM latency

$

We just upgraded to our vCenter and Hosts to VMware 6.5 update 1.  After the upgrade we are seeing high vm latency in vman.  Datastore latency seems to be reporting correctly, but vm latency is reporting things like 100,000y.  If you look at the vm performance within vCenter and or ESXi top we are not seeing those latency's and performance is as expected.  We are running vman 7.1 which is supposed to be supported in 6.5.  Was wondering if anyone has seen this.

Has anyone successfully setup a way to remove snapshots automatically? I've done some searching around Thwack / Google searching and have come up empty.

Thank you,

VMWare ESX 6.7 Hardware Health

6.5 Fix does not resolve issue on 6.7. sfcbd-watchdog is running and port 5989 is open.

Still get this error.

Hardware polling failed: Polling of chassis (CIM_Chassis class) failed. The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send.

We have 3 ESXi 6.7 host and soon will have another one.

Has anyone have a solution?

Is there documentation that more completely details the role, function, and implementation of the VMAN Free Additional Polling Engine (APE)?

(....what aspect of VMAN are they intended to be used for? ,   which installer would be used to install one?... )

How is hardware status data propagated from VMAN to Orion via Integration?

With Virtualization Manager enabled, we are sending data from our VMAN environment into our Orion instance.  The datacenter engineers reached out because they had replaced some failed hardware in a host in our cluster and asked how long it took for that data to update.

When I checked the status, I saw that the last polled time was 4:26AM.  That's an odd time since I know that the Hardware Details statuses come from the VMware API when VMAN and Orion are integrated.  We are using the default 12 hour interval for configuration polling and, when I checked, the configuration for the vCenter that manages this host was being polled at 10:30ish.  I kicked off a configuration poll anyway.  I jumped into the VIM_Hosts table and searched for my host to get the VIM_Hosts.ManagedObjectID (host-178515 in my case).  Then I jumped out to my VMAN appliance and did a 'cat /var/hyper9/logs/master.log | grep -i host-178515'

2017-01-13 10:24:52,680 [ConfigData-8] DEBUG com.hyper9.service.configitem.storage.DataStorageProcessor$ConfigDataTask:517 - Processed config data for HostServer host-178515 for job aedecbb8-22dc-4df6-aa76-471aec556580 in 1058.771 ms

I found this entry which indicated that the config data (vs the dozens of other log entries that said 'Processed 5120 samples' -- that is the performance data) but still no change in the hardware status on that node.

I dug a little deeper and looked up the node in APM_HardwareInfo by the nodeID (also found in the VIM_Hosts table) and found that the LastPollTime was 2016-11-13 09:26:43.330 (NOTE:  This is obviously UTC time even though the field name doesn't say so!) and that the categories with problems shows the piece of hardware that has an issue.

Now I am *really* confused because I thought that I should have been able to force an update to this node from VMAN by pulling the configuration data.

After all that my question is -- How is the hardware status data updated in Orion if you have a VMAN instance integrated?  How long should it take to refresh that status data after a change is made?

Create Report for Virtual Machines Including its Host Server Name

Hi Team,

I'm currently creating a custom report of all my virtual machines in hyper-v, however I can't find a way to add its host server name to the report for example:

SERVER1 192.168.0.1  Windows Server 2012  Hosted By: HyperV-Server1

As for now I was able to retrieve all my virtual machines in one report but I'm unable to get its host server name

Your suggestions will be highly appreciated,

Alert for Virtual windows server CPU

Hi,

I am having issue with the CPU alerts.I went through the few Thwack discussion but I did not find any solution. Please see the below details:

Virtual Machine - Windows OS

CPU -  Number of virtual sockets - 2

Number of cores per socket - 1

Total Number of cores - 2

From VCenter performance details - CPU utilization is 100% but no alerts from SolarWinds. (CPU 0 & CPU 1 - Combined utilization - 100%)

Orion Platform 2014.2.1, SAM 6.1.0, QoE 1.0, IPAM 4.1, NPM 11.0.1, NTA 3.11.0, IVIM 1.10.0

Please help me solve the following:

For e.g Node name = A and NodeID = 11

1) how to configure CPU combined utilization alert for node A only

2) how to configure CPU combined utilization alert for all node

3) please provide trigger and reset conditions

I have tried this query but did not work.

Start a new alert. Set it to be a Node alert. Then change it to be a Custom SQL query (with the sub-type still Node).

In the box where you can type your query, add:

join CPUMultiLoad on Nodes.NodeID = CPUMultiLoad.NodeID

where DATEDIFF(mi, CPUMultiLoad.TimeStampUTC, SYSUTCDATETIME()) < 5

and CPUMultiLoad.AvgLoad > 85

This will trigger when any single "CPU" (core or otherwise) is over 85 within the last 5 minutes (ie: one polling cycle)

Reporting Metrics

I am new to Solarwinds. I'm currently trying to answer a simple question, but I am frustrated with my current understanding of Solarwinds. What I want to know is exactly how much memory (actual data value, in megabytes, gigabytes, etc.) is in use when a virtual machine is polled. I would also like to know how much memory is available to the VM. The performance analyzer offers all sorts of aggregate metrics - average, max, min, etc. Where can I look at the raw data from which those are derived?

Custom Report - All VMs by Host With Summary

$

Hello all,

I'm trying to create a report to list all VM guests, grouped by the VM host they are currently on.

I've managed to do this by grouping the table by Virtual Host - Host Name.  So far each host it simply shows the Host Name.

What I would like to do is to have a header for each Host, so I can show the CPU Count, RAM etc in the host.  In a footer, I'd like to count the CPUs / RAM allocated to the guests.

Is this something that will need SWQL?

Thanks,

Chris.

VM Disk Latency Alerts

Since upgrading our environment to ESXi/vCenter 6.5U2 we have been experiencing "VM Disk Latency" according to VMAN. Frequently it will show latency approaching 25 seconds! After hours of trying to find the cause of this latency we are starting to wonder if the data in Orion could be incorrect. We can not find any evidence of latency exceeding 8ms in vCenter nor on the hosts using esxtop.

Where is VMAN pulling the VM Disk stats from and how can I validate that an issue actually exists?

*Note: VMAN 8.2.1 HF1

IOPS vs. Peak IOPS

$

I'm trying to understand the difference between IOPS and Peak IOPS in SWVM. My understanding of these metrics, which I believe to be faulty, is that the IOPS metric is an aggregate of the stats over the collected interval, so vm.iops.latest, for example, would have the latest number of i/o operations reported by a VM, vm.iops.hour would be a rollup of the total iops over the past hour, vm.iops.day would be the rollup of the past day, etc. By contrast, vm.iopsPeak.latest would be the latest high-water mark reported by the VM, vm.iopsPeak.hour would be the highest IOPS reported during any collection over the last hour, and vm.iopsPeak.day would be the highest IOPS reported during any collection in the past day.

Is my understanding correct? It appears not to be because I am seeing a VM reporting iopsPeak.hour of 1792/s, but when I look at the performance chart, I "only" see a peak of just over 200/s in that timeframe, and when I add the IOPs Peak counter, a message is displayed indicating "No data available for this time period." It seems like this issue is related to the VM in question being on an NFS datastore, so perhaps the iopsPeak counter is not valid for NFS datastores.

The other thing that's confusing about this is that SWVM shows statistics that do not seem at all related to what's being reported by VMware. For example, I'm looking at the output from a particular VM, and it shows 428 IOPS most recently. Looking at the same data in vCenter, the highest number of disk requests I can find in the past hour for that VM is 63.

Can anyone help clear this up for me?

Thanks,

Tom

New VMAN 7.2 Appliance available

$

Hey folks! Doc Lady here with news!

We just released a new VMAN 7.2 appliance today running on CentOS 6!

The important note: You can't upgrade to it. You must migrate to it.

VMAN 7.2 appliance is compatible with VIM 7.1/Orion Platform 2017.1. If you have not upgraded to that version (which VMAN 7.1 released with), you will need to upgrade your Orion Platform too. What else runs on this version? NPM 12.1, SAM 6.4, etc!

What changed?

  • Only the appliance. It now supports CentOS 6.
  • You don't need to upgrade your VIM if you are on 7.1, or have Orion Platform 2017.1 running. Check the footer in the Orion Web Console for details on versions installed.

THE DOCS!

Release Notes: VMAN 7.2 Release Notes - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support

Migration Guide walk-through: VMAN 7.1 to 7.2 appliance migration for CentOS 6 - SolarWinds Worldwide, LLC. Help and Support    This info is for Thick Clients, but you can use thin clients too.

Basically you will:

  1. Deploy 7.2 on a VM (VMware or Hyper-V).
  2. Move the VMAN License (migrate utility in 7.2 modified to help do that without needing support help!).
  3. Toss the data disk from 7.2.
  4. Move the data disk from previous appliance to 7.2.

For all the walkthrough steps, definitely follow the doc! A video will be added soon too.

Cheers!
